Portable monitor buying guide

I Tried 4 Ways To Get More Screens Out Of The Office. Only One Actually Worked.

Let me save you the time and money I wasted.

In the office I work across three screens. Out of it, I tried everything to get that back:

  • 1.One laptop screen
  • 2.Packing the monitor from my desk
  • 3.A cheap portable monitor from Amazon
  • 4.A single-screen portable monitor

Here's my honest review of each.

One laptop screen

I thought this would be fine, but after a full day of splitting my screen up and flicking between documents constantly, I'd had enough. Everything took longer, and I got far less done than I would in the office.

My verdict: Fine for emails. Not for a full day's work.

Packing the monitor from my desk

Next I tried taking my desk monitor with me. It was heavy, it barely fit in my bag, and it needed its own power and a mess of cables every time I set up.

My verdict: Two screens, but not something you can carry every day.

A cheap portable monitor from Amazon

It looked great in the photos and the price was right. Unfortunately, it never worked straight out of the box. The screen started glitching and when I contacted support, I never heard back.

My verdict: Ended up being a complete waste of money.

A single-screen portable monitor

Then I tried a single-screen portable monitor. It was easier to carry, but the screen was too thin and clearly not durable. It got damaged on a work trip far too easily and became useless.

My verdict: Was good while it lasted, but not durable enough to take away (the whole reason I bought it).

The one that worked

The NomaDesk TriView

Honestly, i was hesitant at first. But i've been using it for 4 months now and this is what I like most about it.

01

I Can See Everything At Once

Emails on one screen, my work in the middle, spreadsheets on the other. No more flicking between windows.

02

It Folds Flat Into My Laptop Bag

I folds down flat and inwards so the screens are protected. It only weighs 1.8 kilograms as well so it's easy to move with.

03

It's Easy To Use.

Unfold it, plug in one cable, and both screens switch on. It really is that easy and it makes you want to use it.

04

It's Built To Be Used Every Day

The hinges were tested over 200,000 times, every unit is checked before it ships, and it comes with a 12-month warranty and a real team that replies.

Final verdict

Would I recommend it? To anyone who works on more than one screen and doesn't always work at the same desk, absolutely.
